The Applewood West neighbourhood is located between Dundas St and Burnhamthorpe Rd, Cawthra Rd to the west and Dixie Rd on the east. Applewood West includes two distinct areas known as Applewood Heights (south of Bloor) and Applewood Hills (north of Bloor). Applewood East is on the east side of Dixie Rd.
In the 1950's the neighbourhood of Applewood Heights was developed by Shipp & Son, on the T.L. Kennedy farmland in the vacinity of Dundas St. and Tomken Rd. These homes were predominantly single and semi-detached bungalows and backsplits. They were affordable quality built homes in their day and remain so today and are perfect homes for first time buyers. This was the second large development by Shipp in Mississauga, however, unlike the previous offering in Applewood Acres, these homes did not necessarily offer an attached garage. Shipp built homes in this area can be easily identified by a tile in the brick which contains the builder's signature name. Subsequent development in the 70's and 80's was in the area between Tomken and Cawthra. These are generally larger bungalows, split level and two storey homes with attached garages.

In the 1970's, Shipp began to develop yet another neighbourhood, known as Applewood Hills north of Bloor St. These homes are larger detached homes, predominantly split level, bungalows and two storey homes on large mature lots. This area also offers a good selection affordable townhomes and condominium units.
